So often (probably too often) we find ourselves rushing around, trying to meet everyone’s demands. “I can do what I want later…plenty of time”. The days start to turn into weeks, the weeks into months, months into years and, before we know it, we’ve woken up one day and WTF? Where did the time go?
WE need to take some time out and ask a question that is temptingly easy to ignore:
Are we living up to our potential?
We need to ask this question. As only by asking it can we arrive at an answer.
And if the answer is no—that we aren’t living up to our own potential—then we’ve got to make some changes, and fast, because the thrill of fulfilling your own potential is so worth it, in every sense.
Because when we aren’t, we’re bound to experience prolonged feelings of anxiety, angst and disappointment—sometimes without ever knowing why. Trust me. I’ve been there.
And it ain’t fun.
I remember sitting at my desk in my old 9-5 job. Looking out of the window thinking “is this it?”, “is this what I worked so hard for?”
And why was I there?
Because that’s where I thought my potential was. That’s where I had been taught my potential was. That’s where I had been falsely led to believe my potential was—through years of schooling, teachers, parents and the media, all telling me that I could do “be somebody” and do “big things.” – because to them, “being somebody” and “doing big things” meant surrendering myself to the system, making someone else a huge profit and doing what I was told until I retired.
Is that what people thought my potential was?! A resource (human resources anyone?) to making other people money and being paid a small margin of the profit. Provided I was good and did what I was told that is.
I wanted more. To do anything meaningful I had to start to tap into my own potential. I had to jump from the nest and make a leap into the unknown. I won’t lie, it’s scary!
And you know what?
I was flying! I was alive! I was jumping out of bed, full of energy. Full of excitement. Ready to live fully. Revelling in the opportunity to live life to the fullest. To live by my rules. ‘Cause they’re the best!
I look forward to each day. I truly feel I am working toward my potential and this is just the tip of the iceberg. I am working on what I enjoy and because of this I am good at my job. DP Web Development is just the start.
And it feels amazing! It is a mixture of pride, excitement, passion. Some anticipation and butterflies in the stomach. Truly you should experience this.
And you can. Really you can.
Are you living to your true potential? Because that is where life truly starts!
